The Papillon Dog is a toy dog that is also known as a Continental Toy Spaniel. This breed has a distinctive plumed tail, which is long and curls over the back. Its beautiful white coat can be infused with one of a wide range of colors, and some are even tri-colored. The ears of this breed may be either erect or drooping. The short pointed muzzle and the bright, dark eyes give this dog a very alert and intelligent expression.   The middle strip of this dog’s face is white, and the ears, sides, and the hair over the eyes are patches of another color depending on the coloring of the dog. The Papillon carries himself gracefully and has a fine bone structure.   Its ears are said to look like the wings of a butterfly, hence the breed’s name – Papillon is French for butterfly. History of Bergamasco The Bergamasco breed is over two thousand years old. It is believed that the breed originated in Persia, but migrated into Europe with nomadic shepherds. They were used as herding and guarding dogs and, because of their great intelligence, were often left to work under their initiative, guarding the flock, deciding when to move the flock onto new pastures, and looking after the newborn lambs. Once plentiful in the Italian Alps, they almost became extinct in the middle of the twentieth century as demand for wool – and hence the sheep that produce it and the dogs that look after the sheep – fell. Dr. Maria Andreoli, an Italian geneticist, led the effort to save them from disappearing forever. Under her affix of dell ‘Alberta’, she bred Bergamaschi using the original genetic lines so that the breed was a true representative of its origins. The name “Poodle” is derived from the German word “Pudel”. While the larger Poodles were being used as gundogs to retrieve waterfowl, the smaller Poodles were trained as “truffle dogs”. Their keen sense of smell was used to search for and dig up this rare delicacy. The types of dogs used for this work had to have sharp noses and be light on their feet, so they would not damage the valuable truffle. Their hair was trimmed into pompoms to match the pompoms on the clown’s costumes. The basenji is one of the world’s most ancient breeds. Much mystery and debate are surrounding the breed but it is generally thought that they originate from the Congo where the Pygmies used them as a hunting dog, as they still do today. As well as hunting the fearsome reed rat they are used to drive games such as small antelope into the nets of the hunters. History The Pygmies are known to have had contact with the Egyptians throughout various dynasties and Basenjis were probably given to the Egyptians as a tribute. Carvings and paintings of these little dogs have been found in the Great Pyramid of Khufu dating back to 2700 BC but the breed remained undiscovered until around 1870 when they appeared in the writings of explorers to Africa. The first Basenjis to be exhibited were at Crufts in 1895 but the breed was not successfully exported to Britain until 1936. Jack Russell Terrier Temperament: The Jack Russell Terrier, or JRT, is a breed with almost unlimited energy. This dog is strong-willed and determined. He is confident and fearless.
