Buying a Cat – Are You Ready? So, you’ve decided that you want to have a pet cat. However, before you buying a cat, you may need to consider a few important things. After all, finding out that a cat is not for you after you’ve already grown attached can be heartbreaking. The main reason that people have to find their cats new homes is that they are allergic to cats. If you’ve never spent much time around cats, be sure you can spend a few hours in a home with cats without developing an allergy attack. Also, check with friends and family to be sure none of them are highly allergic. Next, you may want to consider your lifestyle. Although most cats need less interaction than dogs, your cat can still become lonely and bored if left alone all day. A bored cat is often a bad cat. If you work long hours, consider getting two kittens so that they can keep each other company.

Bombay Cat Breed: Characteristics, Temperament, Cat CareBombay Cat Breed: Characteristics, Temperament, Cat Care

The Bombay cat is an attractive shorthair hybrid breed with a shiny black coat and copper eyes. The Bombay was developed in the US by Burmese breeders trying to improve their cats’ color and body type. Against the rules of the day, they out-crossed their Burmese to black American Shorthairs and produced some attractive cats. In 1953, a Kentucky breeder named Nikki Horner set out to produce a mini panther. The black leopard of India inspired the choice of the name “Bombay”. She began breeding champion Burmese with champion black American Shorthairs and through a careful breeding and outcrossing program developed the Bombay cat breed. Because the black gene is dominant the Bombays bred true. The Bombay finally achieved the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) championship status in 1976. Outcrossings are still being made to the Burmese in order to maintain the body type. Cat size Medium Exercise Docile – requires little exercise Grooming Minimal grooming –

The spotted Egyptian Mau Cat is the only natural breed of pedigreed spotted domestic cat and is arguably descended from the sacred cats of Egypt. Egyptian Maus bear a strong resemblance to spotted cats depicted in wall-paintings found in the temples of Thebes which were built on the Nile around 1400 B.C. An earlier tomb at Thebes, dated about 1750 B.C. contained an earthenware statuette of a spotted cat. The Egyptian Book of the Dead dated around 1100 B.C., contains spells that will guarantee a safe passage to the afterlife and also includes papyrus pictures of spotted cats. The Maus of this period were probably descended from the African wild cat. They were later domesticated, cherished as pets, worshipped as gods and mummified after their death. The origins of the Mau breed can be traced back to almost 3,500 years ago. The modern Mau (actually mau is the Egyptian word for cat) is a common domesticated breed in North Africa and can be found in the streets of Cairo.

Hyperthyroidism Disease In Cats: Signs ,Symptoms And TreatmentHyperthyroidism Disease In Cats: Signs ,Symptoms And Treatment

Hyperthyroidism is a common problem in older cats. Also known as hyperthyroid disease, it is caused by the enlarging of the thyroid gland and the increased production of thyroid hormones. Usually, this is caused by a benign tumor on one or both of the glands. Though these tumors can be cancerous, the chance of a tumor being malignant is very low: 2-5%. Signs and Symptoms Cats very rarely show all the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, but one or two of the symptoms may be severe enough to warrant a trip to the vet. Cats with hyperthyroidism often have an increased appetite but are losing weight. Some may become irritable or nervous. It is not uncommon for cats with hyperthyroidism to look as though they haven’t groomed themselves in a while. Vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness are also common, but any cat showing these symptoms for more than 24 hours should see a Vet. Never allow your cat to vomit for more than 24 hours as this can cause severe dehydration and be a sign of an even more serious problem.

Cornish Rex Cat The Cornish Rex cat has the softest and finest textured coat of any cat breed. The Cornish Rex cat breed was developed from a genetic mutation that originated in a litter born on July 21, 1950, on a farm in Cornwall, England. One of the kittens, a cream-colored male called Kallibunker, had an unusually soft, fine and curly down coat. Kallibunker was used in a breeding program and genetic testing showed that the coat was the result of the recessive rexoid gene.   They called their new breed the Cornish Rex cat. In 1957, two of Kallibunker’s descendants, a pregnant blue female, and a red tabby male, were exported to the US. Two blue-and-white kittens from this litter founded the Cornish Rex breed in the US. Meanwhile back in England, another mutation occurred in nearby Devonshire resulting in the Devon Rex.   While the Devon Rex’s coat looked somewhat similar to the Cornish’s,

Cat Vaccination Is Important For Your Cat?Cat Vaccination Is Important For Your Cat?

What is cat vaccination? A cat vaccination is just like a vaccine for your children. It contains a modified or dead virus that enters the bloodstream through an injection, intranasal spray, or edible form. The immune system reacts to this intruder and creates antibodies for the specific virus being introduced. Over the course of a few weeks, these antibodies will be created and remembered for future protection providing larger and faster responses.   If the cat is ever exposed to a dangerous or live form of the virus, they now have an adequate response system that will keep them from getting sick or help to lessen the severity of the illness. It is important that you do not vaccinate a cat that is ill as their weakened immune system may not be able to fight off the injected virus.     Why do I want to vaccinate my cat? Vaccinating your cat helps them build an immunity to certain diseases that could lead to expensive vet bills or death.

Best Siamese Cat Breed Guide – History, Health and CareBest Siamese Cat Breed Guide – History, Health and Care

We Siamese are an ancient breed. We actually existed much like this in nature. Over the years, yes we have had breeders breed us to certain standards, but for the most part we are a natural breed–that is we evolved this way and were not crossed from other breeds. Siamese Cat History The stunning contrast of our fur colors, our rich blue eyes and distinctive personality has made us a hit with cat fanciers. We have since been bred. The CFA standard Siamese has a lovely wedge shaped head, almond shaped eyes and a sleek tubular body. Other Siamese cat lovers have bred a heavier set cat, called an Applehead. Many believe the Applehead is the ‘original’ Siamese, but no one really knows for sure. While I am certain that the Siamese was created first and then other creatures after and no doubt Bastet in Egypt was a Siamese, no one is actually certain where we originated.

Oriental Cat the Right Breed Do you love the temperament of the Oriental Cat breed, but wish you could find a cat with a very different coat color? If so, the exuberantly affectionate Oriental is the perfect breed for you. These charming cats are closely related to the Oriental Cat and are even considered to be Siamese by many cat associations. However, the Cat Fanciers Association considers these cats to be a distinct breed that just happens to be descended from the Oriental Cat breed.   The Oriental was originally a shorthair breed, but longhairs are now available, as well. While the Oriental breed is said to have been founded in Great Britain in the nineteen fifties, Oriental Cat with a wide range of colors has been around for hundreds of years. In the early nineteen hundreds, breeders decided they only wanted Siamese to come in the traditional point colors, and the color variations became much less common.

What is feline leukemia? | How to care for a cat with FeLVWhat is feline leukemia? | How to care for a cat with FeLV

Feline leukemia is one of the most common diseases to befall cats, especially those that go outdoors. It is highly contagious amongst cats and is a virus that attacks the immune system of the host, causing immunodeficiency problems that can lead to a host of secondary infections, many of which can be fatal if not treated swiftly.   How can I tell if my cat has FeLV (feline leukemia)?     Not all cats who are exposed to the virus will get it. Those that do will begin to show symptoms two to four weeks later during the acute stages of the disease. These cats will have a fever, be lethargic, vomit, and have swollen lymph nodes. Excessive vomiting is always a sign that your cat needs to see the Vet, so if you get your cat to the vet early then they can begin treatment and you can work on protecting them from secondary infections.
