As people move away from owning farms and livestock, the need for the skills of the herding dogs has dwindled. But, they continue to make excellent pets. Until 1983, dog breeds in this category were part of the working group. All the dogs in the herding group have the instinctual ability and drive to control the movements of other animals. The Shetland Sheepdog is a long haired herding dog. Shelties are known as one of the most intelligent, obedient, and loyal breeds. they are devoted to their families. Shelties are loving, loyal dogs that, when raised in the right environment, will be a friend for life. The Shetland Sheepdog traces back to the Border Collie of Scotland. Shelties are a small breed but are quite agile and sturdy. They make good companions and are eager and willing to please their owners. Shetland Sheepdogs will require mental and physical exercise on a daily basis. APPEARANCE Shelties stand between 13 and 16 inches at the shoulder. Weight is between 14 to 27 pounds. The Shetland Sheepdog resembles a miniature version of the rough-coated Collie. Submissive peeing is a submissive gesture that can happen when a dog is over-excited, anxious and/or fearful. You cannot punish your dog for submissive peeing because your dog is not doing it on purpose and cannot help it. If your dog is young, it can sometimes be outgrown. How do I work on stopping it? To help dogs overcome this behavior, along with taking some extra housebreaking precautions, you are going to have to work on getting their minds to calm down. Start teaching them canine-to-human respect, take them for daily walks where they are heeling  on the lead and not pulling. They have to be following you, not you following them. Teach them to enter and exit all gate and doorways after humans and exercise them by walking them for long periods of time to help them relax and drain their energy.
